The world of graphic design and photo editing has changed a lot in recent years. Traditional methods of editing pictures on a computer have been supplemented by AI "text to image" technology, which has revolutionized the way images are produced, manipulated, and changed. In this lesson, you will introduce children to the concept of editing images. They will learn when we need to rotate and crop an image, as well as how to use an image editor to make these changes. Learners will then discuss image composition.

Students will learn how to edit different images, change the way they look by adding different effects, change colours and crop images. We introduce children to a number of AI (artificial intelligence) tools that will allow them to make changes to images that only a professional could do a few years ago. They learn how to remove complete objects from pictures and how to add colour to black and white images. Finlay, they use AI "text to image" to create book covers, post cards and newspapers.

🎨Changing Images👩‍🎨

In these lessons children was introduced to the concept of photo editing. . They looked at ways in which an image could be improved or changed. They used coping, rotation, and recolouring. We talked about the different ways the same picture can be changed and how the mood of that image can be changed by the editing process.  This gave students an opportunity to try many of the editing tools available in paint.net. Children will decide of they happy with their edit and if not can start again.

📕Creating a Book Cover📖

Using AI to generate images offers several advantages, which have been made possible by recent advances in machine learning, particularly in the field of deep learning and generative models. We wanted children to put AI picture generation to work and create their own book covers. We asked children to think about a book they would love to write then produce a short book review. The next stage was to design and create the cover using AI picture generation. Year 4 had to think very carefully about the description of the image and title of the book. We don't think they did a bad job for their first atempts.

🧙‍♀️AI MAGIC and children's imagination🧙‍♂️

In this project we have used some traditional techniques to allow children to edit and change the way pictures look. We have also taken the opportunity to introduce using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate images from text descriptions. This allows children to produce a bespoke image to suite a particular project, for example, creating book covers. We have found that using AI with children has stimulates imagination and innovation, boosts self-confidence and sense of achievement and is a fun and engaging way to learn about art. It is also accessible to children when working at home.
