A Trip to the stars

Space

Year 5 used a mix of digital and traditional skills to learn about space. We covered subjects from the origins of the universe, planets, the solar system to the search for life.

All the work was completed in the classroom on Chromebooks and the children finished their worksheets at home. We also worked on a collaborative presentation and self marking quizzes.

When all time began

Talking points

Children have access to a wealth of information right at their finger tips and so one of the key point is to get children to take ownership of their learning.

The lesson incorperates many opportunities to allow children to research what is being talked about and contrubate their finding and thoughts.

This is an important skills and allows children to move from passive learners to acrive learners,

Worksheets & More

Children complete worksheets in the class and at home, examples of these can be seen on the right. But, children did more then that. They created their own presentations featuring some of their personal favourite parts about space.

Children also created self marking quizzes and an example can be seen by clicking the link below.

This was never planned for this lesson, children asked if they could create them to test each other. They researched all the questions and created the quiz either working alone or as teams. This is a great example of how a split between traditional teaching and digital skills can bring out the enthusiasm and inspire children take ownership of their own learning.

See if you can answer all the questions correctly.

children's work

This work is more remarkable because children were never asked to create any sort of presentation at home or in their free time in school. They just did it. Some children worked alone, some children worked in teams using the powerful collaborative tools built into Google Cloud.

It highlights the skills children are starting to learn about and more importantly use. They move from passive learners to active learners. Using the knowledge gained from various lessons and their enthusiasm for the subject they have created some amazing work on their own with no help.
