Digital & AI Skills For All
Our Mission
working together to move digital skills forward
Times have Changed
The way everyone uses IT has changed out of all recognition over the last two years. With the introduction of home learning and working from home, both adults and children have had to adapt to accessing work in a totally different way. Access to “cloud based services”, such as Google Cloud and Office 365, once the domain of IT specialists, has now become a common part of some people's lives.
Children are no exception. With the change in which children access work, it’s even more important to develop important 21st century skills. Computing today does not just involve showing children how to code but encompasses a whole range of digital skills. From using a keyboard and mouse to being able to login and easily access a number of online services that can be used to enhance work in almost any lesson.
Computing Curriculum Planning
We already know how important cloud based access is and making sure apps and websites that children use in school are also available at home so children, if they wish, can continue to work at their own pace under the direction of a parent or guardian. It is also important children understand that access to work is possible from almost any internet connected device.
The school uses the national scheme of work for computing as the basis for its curriculum planning. We have adapted the national scheme to the local circumstances of the school and have used elements of the Government’s Essential Digital Skills Framework and the Welsh Digital Competence Framework to supplement and enrich the objectives.
The Importance of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is all about making computers mimic human capabilities. It's a branch of computer science that tackles tasks that usually require human intelligence, like learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
AI isn't one specific technology, but rather a collection of tools and techniques. Imagine a toolbox filled with different ways for computers to be smart. Some AI systems are good at reacting to their environment, like a chess-playing computer. Others can analyse massive amounts of data to find patterns, which is useful for things like recommending movies or predicting traffic flow.
There's even AI that can understand and respond to language, like the chatbots you might encounter online. While AI is still rapidly developing, it's already playing a big role in many aspects of our lives.
AI is going nowhere! - The aim at Aldwyn Primary School is to give children a good understanding of how AI works, what it can and can not do and how they can children can make best use of it - not as a tool to cheat, but as a tool to enhance learning and creativity.
Teach Computing
At Aldwyn Primary School we taking major steps towards the Teach Computing curriculum. This is a scheme of work that will complement the National curriculum in England: computing programmes of study - key stages 1 and 2.
The current Government and the DfE have realised that computer science is not being take up at high school and want to address the issue by teaching children more about what happens inside a computer, how computer communicate, how the internet works and the input, processing, output that all computer use.
The plan is to complement digital skills with some computer science in an exciting and informative way.

Do You Like What You See?
Maybe you're a primary school or academy that would like to do something similar? Perhaps you are are a leading school or academy group already teaching important 21st-century skills.
But if you are not consider what it would be like to roll out similar abilities throughout all of your primary schools if you are an academy. Other academies would enviously watch. Parents at Aldwyn Primary have been blown away by the manner we've been working with the children and have nothing but appreciation for what we've been doing.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would want to collaborate with us.
